Natalie Mercadante English 10 8/29/19 A life experience that has taught me a life lesson is when my first family member died. Originally inspired by The Washington Post feature, “Life is Short: Autobiography as Haiku,” students write memoirs in 100 words or fewer. This lesson teaches students to “show” themselves in vivid details and carefully chosen words. The lesson has recently been updated to include Google slides and instructional YouTube videos for guided practice! In pre-writing activities, students journal about life experiences.
I’ve been busy working with seventh graders this year, and have not set time aside to write for myself….therefore these next few posts will just be assignments that I gave my class. The one below is a 100-word memoir that I wrote as an example. I challenge you to take a moment from your life and write it for me in 100 words. Publish them in the comment section. I can’t wait to read them!
Here it is:
Ahhh, softball. Hot, sweaty. The energy is palpable. I hit, I run, I make it to first. The next batter is a cheetah. I am already nervous I will slow him down when he runs the bases. CRACK! He hits. I take off. I scoot by 2nd, I think I can make it to 3rd….they are yelling all around me, “Run, RUN, down, DOWN!!!!” I start to slide too late and too close to the base….wham, I collide foot first with 3rd. My foot stopped, but my body didn’t. PAIN is all around me. My ankle is broken.
